Meme Gifts for Friends Who Work in Corporate

Project Manager Needing Sign-Off From Five Departments By January Buys Them All Christmas Gifts, Calls It 'Stakeholder Management'

Olivia, Senior Project Manager, has confirmed she will buy Christmas gifts for five departments this year, in what she calls "the final phase of stakeholder engagement".

Her project goes live on 15 January. It needs one sign-off each from IT, consulting, finance, legal and marketing. She has been asking for them since September.

"IT has been looking into it since October," Olivia said. "Consulting said they'd circle back. Finance approved it, pending another approval. Legal said it's with legal. Marketing will sign off once the logo is bigger."

Comic: a project manager carries a stack of Christmas presents through the office and hands one to an alarmed man behind piles of contracts, a small Christmas tree behind him
Friday, 3:00pm. Stakeholder management.

As of Monday she had sent 23 follow-ups. The most recent one began "Just bubbling this back up", which she describes as the lowest point of her career.

Olivia accepts there is no evidence a gift will change anything. "Nobody has ever signed off a contract because of a Christmas gift," she said. "I know that. I'm doing it anyway."

Her manager supports the plan, and has asked her to capture it as a lesson learned.

Her shortlist, sorted by department, is below. At the time of writing, legal had confirmed receipt of it, and said it was with legal.

The gifts

Sorted by department. Every joke is about the job, so it works even if you only know them from the lift. If someone has changed departments twice, buy from both.

FAQ

What is a meme gift?
A gift built around a joke people already share online or at work: a phrase, a format or a running bit. It works because the person has already laughed at it a hundred times.
What do you get a friend who works in corporate?
Something about their industry, not their actual job. You do not need to know what they do all day, only which building they do it in.
What if you don't know what they do?
Go with the generally unwell section. It fits every industry, because everyone in corporate is at least a little bit tired.
Are these OK to use at work?
Most of them, yes. The button that swears is for home, or for a team that has already seen each other at the Christmas party.
How much should you spend?
Most of these are under $30. A couple cost more and are worth it for the right friend.
Will they arrive in time for Christmas?
Most are made to order by small shops, so order by early December. Each listing shows its own delivery estimate.
